Robin Smith named to Economic Council on Women

Word comes over the transom this morning that Robin Smith, the former chair of the Tennessee Republican Party, has been named to the Tennessee Economic Council on Women.

The council was begun 15 years ago to promote economic opportunities for women in Tennessee.

Smith was selected by House Speaker Beth Harwell and Lt. Gov. Ron Ramsey. Smith led the state GOP from 2007 to 2009, stepping down to run for Congress. She lost by 1,400 votes in the Aug. 2010 primary to U.S. Rep. Chuck Fleischmann.

Smith’s tenure as GOP chief was controversial. Her leadership coincided with President Barack Obama’s successful run for president, and under Smith, the state party lobbed several explosive attacks on the Democratic candidate. But under Smith, the GOP also gained its first majority in both chambers of the General Assembly since Reconstruction, cementing its place as the dominant party in Tennessee politics.

Smith now writes a column for the Times Free Press and runs a management and consulting firm in Chattanooga.
